Now I understand "real time"

I've been tinkering on and off for the last few years with these teletypes. They've made such a difference to how I work... in essence, they've meant that I can actually interact with my programs... and get a response straight away. It used to be so frustrating running my programs overnight, then coming in to the computer centre the next morning to pick up my printout and see what the results output was. One little typo and it all had to be corrected and run again, usually over the next night... But with a teletype I can run a program and interact with it. It responds to my input. How cool is that, eh?

Joshua: Shall we play a game? David Lightman: Love to. How about Global Thermonuclear War. Joshua: Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess? David Lightman: Later. Right now lets play Global Thermonuclear War. Joshua: Fine. David Lightman: What is the primary goal? Joshua: You should know, Professor. You programmed me. David Lightman: C'mon. What is the primary goal? Joshua: To win the game

And sometime this year, I expect to learn that the only winning strategy (at least in this case) is not to play the game.
